John Hutchinson

John Hutchinson is a native of New Mexico and West Texas having been raised in a parsonage household by United Methodist parents. His father, Bishop William W. Hutchinson served as the resident Bishop of the Louisiana Conference of the United Methodist Church from 2000 until 2012. His mother, Kay A. Hutchinson is a skilled musician both as performer and teacher.

John began studying piano in elementary school and began his study of organ while in junior high school. He made the decision to continue his organ study as his primary focus through college and upon graduation from high school, entered Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas on a Nordan Fine Arts Scholarship, the university’s premiere performance award.

At TCU, John was an organ student of Emmet G. Smith, a voice student of Vincent B. Russo, and a conducting student of Ronald Shirey. He served as Assistant to the University Organist, and featured accompanist for the university choirs. During his time at TCU, John served as the first TCU-Church Music Intern at the St. Stephen Presbyterian Church, made his New York City debut as organ soloist at the Park Avenue Christian Church, and was named as an alternate for a Fulbright Scholarship for study in Germany.

Upon graduating in 1991, he had earned both Bachelor and Master’s degrees in music performance and been inducted in the Pi Kappa Lambda Honors Music Fraternity.

Professionally, John has served as Director of Music, Arts and Organist for United Methodist churches in New Mexico, Texas, Missouri and Louisiana. He currently serves as Director of Music, Worship & Arts and Organist at Cumming First United Methodist Church, Cumming GA. John has taught as adjunct music faculty at the University of North Georgia and served for over a decade as Music Director/Assistant Director for the advanced theater and music theater classes at North Forsyth High School.

John is active in the Cumming-Forsyth community, having built a reputation as a fine arts organizer and advocate through his work creating and directing the Cumming FUMC Festival of Arts, one of the largest fine arts festivals in North Georgia.

John is an avid movie buff and loves popular music from the 1900’s – 1940’s. He is also an amateur theater organist and was a featured organist at the annual Plaza Classics Film Festival in El Paso, Texas from 2012-2018
